Our Machinery Brands; Morgan Rushworth
- Peter Dawber
We have been supplying the range of Morgan Rushworth machinery now for over a decade. With a UK manufacturing heritage stretching back to 1872, our customers often ask us not only about the Morgan Rushworth products but also about the history of the company and how they developed into the brand they are today. It is certainly an interesting story…...
Shaping the Industry since 1872
Their strapline sounds like a bold statement, however Morgan Rushworth machines have been working hard in factories around the world for over 147 years. Their machines have been used in shipbuilding in the late 1800’s, aircraft manufacturing during the Second World War, and are currently installed in companies working in the aerospace, military equipment and advanced research industries.
How did it all start?
Morgan Rushworth in its current form was born out of two companies with similar longevity. Rushworth & Company started in Sowerby Bridge near Halifax in 1872 and specialised in heavier machinery for plate working such as plate rolls, heavy shears and bending machines of various types. In 1906, A J Morgan & Son opened a workshop in Lye, Stourbridge in the West Midlands. Their range was aimed at sheet metal applications, such as mechanical shears, manual folders and smaller bending rolls.
In 1972 these two companies joined forces to create the Morgan Rushworth we know today. Their ranges exactly complemented each other with the combined company offering solutions for applications from thin sheet metal up to heavy plate equipment. Their combined resources enabled the new company to continue to innovate their ranges and embrace the opportunities of hydraulic machinery. Famous products such as their HBP folders - still produced today - were developed in this period.
The later 20th Century
Many will remember the ‘Made in Taiwan’ years of the 1970’s and 1980’s which were a challenging time for UK manufacturers as the industry entered a period of relative decline with cheaper imports flooding into the market. Many UK manufacturers of machinery didn’t survive this period and Morgan Rushworth recognised that they urgently needed to do something differently.
Innovate or die
Their strategy to compete in this marketplace was to move primary production overseas to strategically selected factories in order to reduce costs. They went to great lengths to send engineering talent to these facilities to ensure that their products were made in line with their production drawings developed over many years. They managed quality by insisting on high quality steel and specifying leading brand hydraulic and electrical components. Machines always receive a final factory quality inspection and calibration in the UK by qualified Morgan Rushworth service personnel.
Morgan Rushworth today
This move allowed Morgan Rushworth to concentrate on their core values of customer focused product development and embracing of new technology without compromising on quality and reliability.
While they continue to offer their core range of products, the key focus of Morgan Rushworth today is Press Brakes, Folders, Guillotines, Plasma Cutting and Bending Rolls along with Automation, Software and Service.
