Our machinery brands; Sterling

We have been supplying Sterling sawing machinery since the late 1990’s. In those years we saw a lot of success with basic straight cut engineering machines and their original twin pillar tube cutting models. Since then the range has expanded to include circular saws, vertical bandsaws and a much wider range of horizontal bandsaws. So what does Sterling offer you today?

Sawing innovation

The Sterling sawing range is continuously developing with emphasis on automation and productivity; this however isn’t at the expense of offering simple, entry level, robust machinery for basic workshop applications. Alongside this, quality assurance and a continuous improvement program has resulted in ever more reliable products.

How did the sawing range develop?

Mitring head design

Back in the 90’s many bandsaws still used a swivel vice design for performing mitres. Mitring head models became much more common in the early 2000’s and Sterling was at the forefront of this trend. Initial models were single mitre but this soon developed into a double mitring design especially in higher capacity applications. Today’s double mitre semi-automatic models are a staple in structural steel workshops.

Twin column with linear guides

From around 10 years ago, Sterling twin column bandsaws began to feature precision linear guides for the saw frame movement. This allowed much more precise control over the descent of the bow and increased accuracy in the cut, especially when cutting tough solid materials.

Numerical controls

Numerical controls (NC) are offered for both semi-automatic and automatic models. Some of the large double mitre models feature powered mitring in both directions with the required angles being entered into the NC. For automatic models the parameters entered are the cut length and the cut quantity with the ability to program complete cutting lists.

CNC controls

CNC controls which select cutting data according to the material characteristics are now used for automatic machines. The operator chooses the section and material type, enters the required dimensions and the CNC takes over from there. This advanced system monitors the machines performance during the cut including whether there is any blade deviation within set parameters.

Servo cutting and feeding

The most advanced automatic models now feature servo controlled cutting and automatic vice feeding instead of hydraulic systems. Servo motors coupled with ball screw drive technology offers precision of around 10 times greater than the hydraulic alternatives. Together with the advanced CNC controls this is the ultimate in production sawing.
